Most people don’t realize the numerous benefits of check up, scale and cleans. Not only do regular check ups ensure early detection of various dental problems, but the scale and cleaning procedure removes built up plaque and calculus (hardened plaque also known as tartar). At Boctor Dental Smilecentre, our Gold Coast Dentists recommend that you should come in for a check up, scale and clean every 6 months. This allows us to check the progress of your teeth, ensure no decay is forming or present and also bring your gums back up to health.
If you have dental extras cover with a Private Health fund, you are likely entitled to claim two exam, scales and cleans every year (some funds operate on a calendar year, others on a financial year). Our friendly staff are happy to give you treatment item numbers to find out what coverage you’re entitled to.
Prevention of Gum Disease
Your teeth cleaning appointment will begin with an examination of all your teeth. Make sure you tell your Dentist if there are any areas in your mouth that have been bothering you and if you have any dental concerns so the Dentist can address those.
Your Dentist will proceed with the scaling procedure, which involves using a handpiece with an ultrasonic tip that removes built up plaque and calculus (also known as tartar) with ultrasonic vibrations. This process can feel a little sensitive, especially around the back side of your bottom teeth as this is generally where the heaviest calculus build up is. The tip also shoots out water so the dental assistant will be assisting with suction to collect the water. After Your Dentist has scaled off the plaque and tartar, they will proceed to polish your teeth for a smooth, clean finish.
This whole procedure is extremely important for your oral health. In most cases, tartar buildup and plaque are the key causes of various gum diseases, such as gingivitis and periodontal disease. If you experience bleeding gums, it is likely you have a form of gum disease. Periodontitis, or periodontal disease, is a worse form of gum disease, where pockets of plaque collect between your tooth and gums. If left unaddressed, Periodontitis can loosen your Teeth, so much that sometimes they cannot be saved and must be removed. This is why your check up, scale and clean appointment is so important.
Early Detection of Dental Problems
After your Dentist has cleaned off all the plaque and calculus from your teeth, they will thoroughly examine your gums and teeth. Anything that may have been hidden by the plaque will now be visible. This will allow your dentist to look for loose teeth, cavities, discoloration, swollen gums and any irregularities in your mouth. Most of these symptoms can go unnoticed when you don’t visit your dentist on a regular basis. Your Dentist may recommend some tooth x-rays, which can be done on the spot in the dental chair, to see if there are any underlying problems that can’t be seen visibly in the mouth.
Tooth decay that is left untreated can grow so much that large holes can form or parts of your tooth crumble away. It can even lead to an infected nerve, which will need a root canal treatment to fix or the tooth will be lost. Things like signs of oral cancer can also be picked up by your Dentist during your regular check up, scale and clean. In cases such as this, early detection is vitally important. Dental cleaning can be considered similar to screenings for all kinds of dental diseases.
Following your comprehensive examination, the procedure will finish with the application of a topical Fluoride gel over all your teeth. After cleaning off all the plaque and calculus it is good to get a positive base on your teeth to help strengthen your teeth.
Improved Appearance
Regular dental check up, scales and cleans can make sure your teeth look shiny, clear and white. The procedure can remove different kinds of stains caused due to excessive consumption of coffee, smoking and more. Your Dentist can also recommend further treatments and procedures to improve the cosmetic appearance of your teeth.
Tips on Oral Hygiene
Depending on the condition and structure of your teeth, your Dentist can also offer many different tips and suggestions on caring and cleaning your teeth. A circular method for brushing your teeth is recommended, at least twice a day or after your meals. A soft toothbrush is extremely important as you can actually brush away the enamel of your teeth if you use too hard a brush. Flossing is also important to keep food from having a severe impact on your gums. Flossing prevents your teeth from decay and tartar buildup. You can even ask for suggestions on the cleaning regimen, and modern tools for proper dental care.
Save Money in the Long Run
Keeping up to date with your check up, scales and cleans will save you money in the long run. A lot of dental procedures, such as root canals, periodontal treatment and implants are extremely expensive. Even if you have private health insurance, most of these major procedures won’t be fully covered and you will need to pay large gaps. When you visit a dentist for scale and cleans, you can help prevent gum disease, tooth loss and various dental problems, meaning you won’t have to pay for the expensive treatments.
